post ban and pre ban i know alittle about. is it saying if i buy a m4 carbine, im not allowed to put a scope,barrel grip,flashlight,and a laser sight on it all together? i read some articles about it before 1994 (saw) post and after pre. but didnt quiet under stand it. so maybe someone can answer me in dumby terms. also im looking to purchase an assault rifle, such as a m4,m16,or a ar15. not sure which is a better weapon in general. i would like your personal opinion on which you perfer. not an answer of it depends on what your using it for. also what does the a1, a2,a3, after the weapons name mean. example m4 a3. the weapon im leaning towards buying as of now is the m4 a3 patrolman carbine bushmaster. what do you think. thanks for the responses
to begin with, the AWB (assault weapons ban) is now gone, and was just a ban on guns with cosmetic features mostly (flash suppressors, bayonet lugs, folding stocks, pistol grips ETC.) This ban is no longer in effect in most of the country, but some states still carry this ban, like CA and NY.
The difference between the M4, M16, and AR15 is this.
M16-rifle with a 20″ inch barrel capable of fully automatic or burst fire
M4-is the same as the M16 but it has a shorter 16″ barrel and a collapsible stock, its a carbine
the AR15 is the civilian version of the M16, and comes in many configurations, but most notably is that it can only fire in semi-auto, meaning one shot for every squeeze of the trigger.
for the A1 A2 A3 and A4
this has mostly to due with the upper receiver and the sight system
the A1 was the first design and is not used much anymore, it has an unremovable carry handle with sights built right in. i also believe that it had no brass deflector, which bounces the shells away from you as they eject
the A2- is almost the same thing but it has a much more updated sight system, and a brass deflector
The A3 is practically the same as the A4- it is called a “flat top” which has a rail that can let you install a detachable carry handle, or optics if you want to.
as far as personal preferance, i like the A3/A4 because it allows for more versatility than the A2.
The bushmaster is one of the best AR’s you can get, as far as if u think its best it really depends what you plan on using it for.

I have read the debates Mossberg vs Remington and I saw some local ads showing the pistol grip and regular tactic to persuade both for less than four hundred dollars. It costs me more grip gun, automatic, action tactics, traditional activities, etc. Any suggestions?
Realistically, no matter if you are really talking about homeland defense. Take what you like. In fact, auto-loaders, stocks of tactical weapons and butts are all over kill (no pun intended) to defend the country. Looking for something crazy to stop an intruder, not somethng to fight a troop invaders. grandfather's old double barrel would fine as long as it is in good condition.

I tried one at a Mossberg, but he left after the first trip to the beach. In my experience, it is difficult to get a cheek weld comfortable in the population when it was folded.
