With the forthcoming TUSK add-on kit, an M2 or an Mk 19 grenade launcher can be mounted on the CROWS remote weapons platform (similar to the Protector M151 remote weapon station used on the Stryker family of vehicles). 2. A 7.62 mm M240 machine gun in front of the loader’s hatch on a skate mount. 3. A 7.62 mm M240 machine gun in a coaxial mount. The coaxial MG is aimed and fired with the computer fire control system used for the main gun. The turret is fitted with two six-barreled smoke grenade launchers (USMC Abrams use an eight-barreled version). These can create a thick smoke that blocks both vision and thermal imaging, and can also be armed with chaff. The engine is also equipped with a smoke generator that is triggered by the driver.
The Abrams also has provisions for storing an M16 rifle or M4 carbine inside the crew compartment for when they have to leave the protection of the tank under potentially hostile conditions, plus Abrams crews always carry personal side arms, the M9 Beretta pistols. The Abrams is equipped with a ballistic fire-control computer that uses data from a variety of sources, including the thermal or daylight Gunner’s Primary Sight (GPS), a laser rangefinder, a crosswind sensor, a pendulum static cant sensor, data on the ammunition type, ammunition temperature, and a muzzle reference sensor (MRS) that determines barrel drop due to gravity and temperature. The fire-control system uses this data to compute a firing solution for the gunner. The ballistic solution generated ensures a hit percentage greater than 95 percent at nominal ranges. Either the commander or gunner can fire the main gun.
Additionally, the Commander’s Independent Thermal Viewer (CITV) can be used to locate targets and pass them on for the gunner to engage while the commander scans for new targets. In the event of a malfunction or damage to the primary sight system, the main and coaxial weapons can be manually aimed using a telescopic scope bore sighted to the main gun known as the Gunner’s Auxiliary Sight (GAS). The GAS has two interchangeable reticles; one for HEAT and one for APFSDS ammunition.

Depends. If you never shoot over 300 yards with a rifle, you don’t need one. I hunt pretty open spaces here in Montana, so it can be a good idea. The new ones from Leupold are very nice. Keep in mind that a 1500 yard rangefinder will actually only range to about 700 yards, a 1000 yard model to 500. Some have a program on them to tell you how many clicks to adjust your scope for holdover. You can also go to one of the ballistics calculators on the internet and make a laminated card with the holdovers at certain distances. It takes a lot of the guess work out of long range shooting. It is no substitute for practice, though. I feel that most bowhunters should use them. With bow hunting, poor range estimation is probably the number one reason for wounded or missed game. But if you are strictly rifle hunting with a decent velocity round, you really don’t need them for any shots under 300 yards.

When I tested the Nikon Laser 350G at Baildon Golf Course last week, I thought I’d take along my SkyCaddie to allow me to compare and contrast. However, that plan went up in smoke when I realised I’d forgotten to download Baildon onto the SkyCaddie thus meaning I had no readings.
Baildon is an undulating course and that exposed the obvious weakness with a laser range-finder. When you can’t see the flag you’re stuffed!
Whether you opt for a GPS distance-measuring device such as the SkyCaddie or a laser range-finder such as the Nikon Laser 350G is pretty much down to personal preference. Search the internet and there are some fierce debates on chat forums where each camp defend their product and pick holes in the other.
I asked a scratch golfer what he thought and he gave me this very rounded reply.
It’s an interesting debate the laser v GPS one.
My brother, Dad and I go on a little golfing holiday tour each year and this time I hooked my dad up with a SkyCaddie, I used Laser and my brother a free golf GPS application on his Blackberry.
The results were really interesting. The free GPS performed pretty well and my brother loved it because it was absolutely free but struggled with getting the true yardage too often for me.
The SkyCaddie was excellent and even my Dad understood how to use it, but a couple of times, in my view, it didn’t give the exact yardage to the flag unlike the laser.
However, with the stiff links breeze the laser was sometimes hard to use.
Without doubt, my personal preference is for the SkyCaddie but that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I’m a high handicapper (24). I don’t need to know an exact yardage to the pin. I feel it’s more than enough, and indeed more comforting, to know distances to the middle, front and back.
However, it’s not hard to see why a top player would prefer the extra precision of the laser.
The Nikon Laser 350G is compact and very easy to use and, of course, has been specifically designed for golf.
First Target Priority mode enables easy measurement of the distance to the target even against a background of trees or buildings. And by ‘target’ it doesn’t have to be the flag. Distances to water/bunker hazards or angles of a dogleg can also be easily measured.
It’s also waterproof, measures from 11 to 550 yards and thanks to the R&A’s recently amended ruling on range finders (Rule 14-3B)* it’s now a legal addition to your golf bag.
One other consideration is that it can also be utilised at the practice ground. Hit each club 10 times, discount your bad shots and record the distance to the good shots, then simply take the average.
In summary, if your preference is for a laser rangefinder, the Nikon Laser 350G is an excellent, and very affordable, option.
If, however, you’re prepared to pay a little more, the Nikon Laser 350G also has a more advanced brother – the 550A S – more suited to the serious amateur and professional.
It takes distance measurement one-step further by allowing for the slope of the golf course terrain. That means that if you have an uphill or downhill shot to play, the Nikon Laser 550A S will take into account both height distances and slope angles and adjust your yardage to the pin accordingly.
Note that, at present, it is only legal for use in practice, not in competition play.

Does anyone have opinions on a decent budget consciousness rangefinder for bow hunting?
I am considering the Burton Echo and the Bushnell Sport 450. I will be using the unit for primarily bow hunting but it would be nice to be able to accurately range for black powder and rifle as well. I have read the customer reviews on the Bass Pro website but wanted to get some more opinions. Thanks.
I don’t like the use of a range finder for bow hunting unless you are a world class bow shot and are hunting in the western part of the country where longer shots are the norm. If neither one applies to you it is a waste of money and effort to use it strictly for bow hunting. The average distance a deer is killed by a bow hunter is 19 yards. I have a self imposed limit of 35 yards for a bow shot.No need for a range finder at that distance. But The Bushnell would be the one I would get other then the Burton Echo, mainly because I know nothing about the Echo.
