Need help identifying a maker mark on an old gun.?
Have a really old black powder rifle and am trying to trace its origins. It is pretty fancy looking with ivory enlay and a makers maker engraved on the side. The mark is of a lion standing on it’s hind legs facing to the left, if looking at gun, it’s face is turned toward you and it is holding a crown in its paws. The crown is one of the big rounded ones not a solid metal one.
Most bespoke (custom made) guns were centered in England and Spain for the last few centuries, catering to a select audience. With the Lion rampant holding a Crown, it is very probably an English made gun. There are texts on the subject you can research, but it is far more likely you’ll get a quicker answer simply calling a firm like Purdey, Holland & Holland in London, or calling Ugartachea in Spain. If you live near a fine gunsmith, they may be able to tell you as well.
