Help with reloading dies?
hey i recently bought a reloading kit and am now after some dies i read somwhere that carbide dies do not require lube. is this true and if so is it that much of a hastle lubricating
For most “bottle neck” cartridges like your 308,or 30-06,223,243 etc you don’t use carbide dies.The Carbide dies are made for straight wall cartridges like most pistols and straight wall rifles – 444,45-70 (but they use a 3 die set up),and a few more.
You should have gotten some lube (a white paste ) with your Lee kit,and you need to get a pad. I actually recommend tossing the Lee lube,buy an RCBS lube pad and the RCBS lube,it is easier to use and clean up after-once you size your brass you want to clean them with a cloth to get the lube off-and lots of folks use a Q-Tip to clean inside the neck.You need VERY LITTLE lube,but you do need to put some of it on neck interiors to ensure the resizing button works smoothly-too much lube will cause hydraulic denting into the brass,normally along the shoulder area.
To lube you just add a couple drops of fluid onto the pad,spread it and roll a case into it-again,couple drops goes a long way-first few drops might soak in a little to condition the pad,but don’t use much at all,you just need an extremely thin film on the case. For lubing the inside of the neck for the button you can just go vertical with the case and touch the neck into a corner of the pad with a little lube there-and you don’t need to do it for every one.
