Can I wear a standard high visability (orange) vest for hunting?
I have been hunting sambar for many years and I like to think I am pretty efficient these days. One thing I have never got into is the high vis orange camo. But lately I have been taking a few blokes away with me and would like to increase safety.
I was wondering whether I can wear a simple orange high vis vest over my woodland camo or whether it has to be a special high vis camo?
A blaze orange vest is a great way to stay safe when hunting. One of the places I hunt actually has a requirement that you Must Have a certain amount of solid blaze orange on you when hunting. I usually just have the vest over my woodland camo. Also, they make camo patterns that include blaze orange in them along with black, brown and green to break it up a little. I hunt whitetails and the reason that blaze orange is the safety color of choice is that it sticks out for humans but isn’t as bold of a color for the deer. Humans see colors at the yellow/orange end of the light spectrum first which causes them to pop out. A deer however will see colors at the blue end of the spectrum first, causing blue colors to pop out at them first. I’ve done plenty of reading on this subject. Deer also are able to see UV. This is why when you wash your hunting cam you are supposed to use a different type of detergent from your regular close. Most detergents contain UV brighteners which will actually glow when a deer is looking at you causing you to stick out like a sore thumb.
