Powder Steer

Powder Steer
2002 Buick Regal key won’t turn off fully/come out of ignition.?

About 1 1/2 years ago we started having this issue occasionally. When we tried to turn off the car and remove the key from the ignition, the key would stop turning in the ignition one position away from the final “release” position and we would not be able to remove it. We would wiggle the key forward and back in the ignition until you heard a “click”, the ignition would turn to the full off position and we could remove the key. Somedays it happened many times and sometimes not at all. We took the car to a mechanic who found nothing wrong and just put some graphite into the ignition. It worked great for almost two years and now it is back with a vengance! I bought graphite powder and put it into the ignition as the mechanic had done with NO improvement. It is getting worse by the day. We have tried all the combos of wiggling steering wheel, shifter, brake, etc… I keep reading people are wasting money having the whole ignition cylinder replaced unnecessarily. What should we do?

Customer Concern: Unable to remove the key from the ignition.

Tests/Procedures: 1. Access the connector on the shifter and backprobe the Pink wire at terminal F. Verify that the key on power equals battery voltage.

2. If the voltage is low, repeat voltage test on the BTSI fuse. If the voltage on the fuse drops, replace the ignition switch.

3. If the voltage on the Pink wire is OK, backprobe the Purple/White at terminal C on the shifter connector. This wire should have battery voltage when the shifter is in the park position. This energizes a solenoid to allow the key to turn to the lock position.

4. If the voltage drops on the Purple/White and is OK on the Pink, replace the switch (shifter assembly). Bypass the shifter park switch for TESTING only by jumping the Pink to the Purple/White and the key will not be able to be rotated to lock in any gear position.
