Bubba’ing a Yugo SKS?
Yes, I hate to admit it but I want to bubba a yugo sks.
Are the tapco detachable magazine’s really good and won’t have feed problems?
are there any mags with a larger capacity then 20rds that are still good?
Should I use a recoil buffer on it?
Do I really need to buy that $25 clamp to take the grenade launcher off?
Is the yugo sks prone to slamfire problems as the others? should I change out the firing pin?
Trying to build a cheap assualt rifle may cost a lot of money after all!
Bubba away!
Tapco mags have a hit-or-miss reputation. You do have to shave some wood if you want to use a Tapco mag with the original stock.
Recoil buffers are a waste of money.
You don’t need any clamp to remove the grenade launcher. Drive out the pin and it just unscrews!
The Yugo is equally prone to slamfire as any other SKS, or any floating firing pin gun ever made. The “problem” is that people are taking guns that have been stored in Cosmoline for 40 years and firing them without cleaning the bolt. Cosmo is thick enough that the firing pin will stick in the forward position.
While some folks talk about replacing the firing pin with a spring-loaded one, that’s completely unnecessary. A floating firing pin is not an unsafe design. Just clean the friggin bolt! If you take the bolt out and shake it, the firing pin should rattle. Personally, I have a glass jar full of Hoppes #9. I just drop the bolt in for a good soak while I clean the rest of the gun.
Honestly, every “performance enhancing” doohickey sold for an SKS is a waste of money. The spring-loaded firing pins are thinner, and they bend. Recoil buffers shorten the travel stroke of the action, and can cause malfunctions. Trigger jobs lighten the hammer strike, so your SKS may stop firing military surplus ammo. Bubba what you want, but be sensible!
For my Yugo, I:
-replaced the grenade launcher with a muzzle brake (Not that it needs a brake, but this shortened the gun about 2″)
-removed the GL sights
-removed the rear sights
-add a receiver-mounted aperture sight.
