Does Anyone know of a company that makes a custom Ballistic Reticle for a Leupold?
I am looking for a solid scope, with a ballistic reticle similar to the Varmint Hunter reticle offered by leupold, for a 308. Does anyone have experience with the Varmint Hunter reticle using a 308? Or that reticle in general? I like the concept, i am just not sure how well it works. Is there any shops out there that modify or make a scope with a custom reticle?
Your best bet is probably to shop around for a new scope with the reticle you want installed by the factory.
If your Leupold is newer then you will have to send it back to Leupold for any repairs or upgrades, otherwise the warrenty will be void if anyone else tampers with it.
If your talking about an older Leupold it might cost more to alter the scope than it’s worth.
Now here is the catch, just becasue the reticle is graduated for a .308 doesn’t mean it will be accurate to your rifle. It will be close at best. There are variables involved with every rifle that affect bullet drop at given distances. Barrel length, muzzle velocity, bullet weight and bullet ballistic coefficient.
A 150 gr bullet traveling at 2800 FPS will follow a completely different path than a 180 gr bullet traveling at 2,500 FPS
So unless you have ammunition that perfectly matches the ballistics intended for the reticle it won’t be accurate at extended ranges beyond the sight in point.
Another route you can go with is to find yourself a scope with a mil dot reticle, then if you know enough about your rifle and ammo such as muzzle velocity, bullet ballistic coefficient and bullet weight you can use the handloads.com ballistics calculator to determine your hold over in mildots at extended ranges.
