What is the best semi-auto rifle which takes 7.62mmx51 Nato. ?
I want to use the same ammo that my .308 remington uses.
There are 4 big players and a bunch of minor players.
The major players are the AR-10(.308 AR-15), the FN-FAL (and clones), the HK-91 (and clones), and the M-14.
From there it depends on what you want.
I never liked the direct gas system in the .308 ARs, with that much more powder there is THAT much more fouling.
The HK-91 has sharp recoil and the barrel can only be changed by cutting and welding the receiver.
The M-14 is heavy and essentially a Garand with a detachable magazine.
The FAL is a good balanced weapon, it is not the best in categories of accuracy, cleaning, reliability and ergonomics, but it is probably the overall score winner. At about $1200 for an American made DSA FAL you are getting a heck of a rifle.
For about $900 you can get a US made HK-91 (Ptr-91).
M-14s go for about $1200 for a Springfield, higher for GI and lower for Norinco clones.
.308 ARs are around $1,000 depending on all the options you opt in or out of.
My pick is the FAL with an 18″ barrel and US made internals with a 4x ACOG combat optic on top….
