Rifle Brass

Rifle Brass
Differences in cleaning a rifle?

Why is it my mosin nagant 91/30 takes 2+ hours to clean and my ak 30 minutes even when using the same brand of ammo? Is it neccesary to use a brass brush every time you clean and if not when would it be used? Why does my ruger 10/22 take only three or four wet passes and 8 or so dry patches to get completley clean after shooting 400+ rounds?

Alot depends on the condition of the bore. If the bore in your Mosin is rough and worn, it will foul more heavily than a bore in very good condition. Barrels that have heavy rifling also foul more that the barrels with fine grooves cut in them. This will add to the cleaning time considerably. I have the same issue with an old Enfield of mine. It has heavy rifling and the bore is not in the best condition. It fouls very easily and requires much more effort to clean than many of my other rifles. With a clean bore, it is still remarkably accurate, but it does need extra attention to keep it that way. The use of a brass brush is not a necessity, if I can get my bore clean without one, I avoid using one. But if the barrel is heavily fouled or fouls easily, I use about 8 strokes of the brush dipped in solvent to loosen any copper and other fouling.

During its production run, from 1866 to 1898, about 170,000 pieces were made in Winchesters Connecticut factory. The gun fired a .44 caliber rimfire round from the tubu…
