I have a 22 long rifle Hopkins and Allen #722. Does anyone know where I can find info on this gun?
Websites, books, anything that can tell me when the gun was produced, and how much it may or may not be worth. thanks.
Okay, realzed this after I submitted the question. The rifle is not a long rifle. it is a .22. It is also a single shot, breach loading just infront of the hammer.
Blue book and The Standard Catalog of Gun Values both have some information regarding Hopkins Allen firearms.
Here is a bit of info I’ve gleaned over the years.
Hopkins and Allen were the last incarnation of the firearms dynasty founded by Ethan Allen (not the Revolutionary War hero) in the 1830′s. Allen formed a series of partnerships such as Allen & Thurber, Allen & Wheelock.
After Ethan Allen’s death in 1871, the company was taken over by his son-in-law, and reorganized as Forehand & Wadsworth, which operated until about 1890, when it was again reorganized as Forehand Arms. In 1902, the company was bought by Hopkins & Allen (a decendant of Ethan Allen) and the company continued to manufacture inexpensive handguns, rifles and shotguns until the Marlin Corp. bought them out in 1914.
Under Ethan Allen, the company dominated the pepperbox revolver field. They were so ubiquitous that Mark Twain made use of an Allen Pepperbox as the butt of some humorous comments. In addition to pepperboxes and derringers, Allen & Wheelock also produced some rather unusual looking revolvers, mostly percussion, but there wer a few lipfire and rimfire models as well. They also made a few hundred muzzle-loading rifles, including a rather interesting over/under rifle-shotgun combo gun. In addition to the muzzle-loaders, they marketed two rather inovative breechloading rifles, one using unfixed ammunition and one using rimfire ammunition ranging from the .22 Short to .44 Henry RF. Many Allen firearms looked cumberous to modern eyes, but they apparently sold pretty well.
Under the Forehand & Wadsworth banner, production ran mainly to derringers and small revolvers of the Suicied Special variety, along with a couple of full sized belt guns (New and Old Model Army Revolvers, but they never got an Army contract) in .44 Russian. They also made some single and double-barreled shotguns.
Hopkins & Allen, founded in 1868, continued to make derringers and small revolvers as well as double-barreled shotguns. In addition, they made some high quality Shutzen style target rifles rifles (today, these fine target rifles bring up to $2,00.00 or more). They also made some falling block single-shot rifles in calibers ranging from .22 RF to .38-55 Winchester, this is probably the same model as your rifle, they were made between 1888 and 1892 (prices range pretty close to $1,000.00 for a specimen in excellent condition). Though they are not listed among Hopkins & Allen firearms in the reference books, they also made some singl-barreled shotguns, probably using up the leftover inventory of Forehand Arms. I have an old Hopkins & Allen single barrel marked as the Forehand Model, my grandfather bought it used in the late 1920′s or early 1930′s.
Besides firearms marked with their own brand, Hopkins & Allen sold cheap revolvers and derringers under the trade names of: Acme, Blue Jacket, Captain Jack, Chichester, Defender, Dictator, Imperial Arms Co., Monarch, Mountain Eagle, Ranger, Tower’s Police Safety, Universal, and XL. Hopkins & Allen were also the manufacturers of the Merwin & Hulbert line of revolvers.
If your rifle is a family heirloom, I hope you are trying to find the value only for insurance purposes and curiosity. If that old rifle has been in your family for generations, you really ought to keep it in the family. If you don’t want to keep it, you should give it to another descendant of the original purchaser. My old Hopkins & Allen is probably worth less than $50.00 in monetary value, but since it was Big Daddy’s and he gave it to me, I’d not trade it for a new Holland & Holland Royal Grade.
