what is a Cantilever mount?
I was looking at a red dot aimpoint style sight, and it states it has a Cantilever mount. I’m not sure what that is. I have a weaver type rail on my CETME (G3) and was wondering if this would work.

Cantilever mount is a term most associated with shotgun barrels where a special mount is attached directly to the barrel, and then the scope attached to that. This allows the barrel to be removed and the scope to stay with it, maintaining the zero.
So why do they call it a Cantilever? That is an engineering/archeticture term that refers to a “projection” like ramp or something that is only supported at one end. Remember in those old movies when pirates would have someone “Walk the plank” that would be an example of a Cantilever, only the back is anchored, and the rest hangs out on front.
Obviously, this type of attachment puts a fair amount of strain on that one point, so it is resctricted to relatively short items.
As far as your red dot aimpoint I THINK what it means is that it only attaches to your rail at one point, whereas many scopes attach to the rail at two points for better stability.
But then, red dots are light and short, so it probably works just fine for that. Also, this may make it easier to add a nigh vision device or a magnifier to the same weapon, also with a single point mount.
