Has someone hacked my Belkin?
Hi, I’m having a problem logging into my Belkin router setup ip to alter various settings like router name, wpa passwords etc.
I’ve just setup my new internet account and secured it with WPA. However i soon discovered the bandwidth was running at snails pace so i checked the client list only to find someone was piggybacking my connection. So I clicked refresh to boot them off, changed my LAN name & WPA password and logged out.
Ever since then I tried to log back in to the setup page (not the wireless network) only to presented with login error?
If the password has been changed by ‘them’ or accidently by me, what can I do?
p.s. i’ve already tried physically pressing the restart button for some time and also enter the numerous Belkin passwords like admin, default and even password.
First, I assume you have the correct Belkin IP address. If I remember, Belkin uses admin for the name and no password at all, but look in your user or quick start documentation to find out. Also, when you reset the router, take the power cord out first and then hold the reset button for 5-10 seconds.
The answer to your other questions are:
1. No one else can change the password as you have to be connected directly to the wireless router with a cable when you change the password, so no one outside your house can do it.
2. Unless someone cracked your password, they cannot ‘piggyback’ on your connection. If you have any doubts, switch to WPA as it is much more secure.
3. To increase your speed and reduce interference, change the channel number. First, do a survey of your site (use NetStumbler, a free download). Look at all the wireless systems that show up and make note of the channel they are using. I think Belkin uses #6 as default and Netgear uses #10. Most people don’t know about this, so they leave it set at the default setting. Then, everyone is using the same channel and are stepping on one another. No matter, what you want to do is to use a channel that no one else is using. For example, if you don’t see a #9 or #10 in use, then, when you change your password, use that channel. This will reduce cross talk and flooding of the channel and give you the maximum possible range and bandwidth.
Good Luck.
