A 7.00 g bullet, when fired from a gun into a 1.20 kg block of wood held in a vise, penetrates the block to a depth of 9.40 cm. This block of wood is next placed on a frictionless horizontal surface, and a second 7.00 g bullet is fired from the gun into the block. To what depth will the bullet penetrate the block in this case? (Assume that there is a constant frictional force in both cases. In the first case this frictional force will remove all the kinetic energy of the system by moving 9.40 cm. In the sencond case the frictional force will remove some of it by moving some distance and the bullet-wood system will have nonzero final kinetic energy. To find this final velocity use the conservation of momentum.)
You find the frictional force using the result of the first experiment understanding that work = force * distance = Kinetic energy
Then you need to find the difference in kinetic energy in the second experiment using the conservation of momentum.
Then use work=force* distance= delta kinetic energy to find the distance.
