how to skin a bird preparing for mount?
i have a bird that i am going to mount but i need to know how you skin a bird in preparing it. i have never done a bird. thanks
I use a bamboo skewer, to part the feathers down the center of the breast….Make an incision the length of the breast, and start skinning around the body…Be very careful, as some bird skins tear easily…skin down the “drumsticks” until you are at the legs, and cut the dumsticks off near the body….keep skinning across the back, until all the skin is loose…skin around the button at the tail, until you expose the oil glands…remove them, and the skin should be loose to the wings…Cut the wings at the body, and skin as far up the neck as possible…Some birds will skin over the head, some will not….If it will not skin over the skull, reverse the skin, and make an incision across the back of the head, and remove all the flesh possible by skinning out to the beak….Be careful skinning around the eyes, and cut the skin down in the ear openings….Go back to the wings, and start skinning them out….When you get to the second joint, use a sharp knife, and slowly skim the back of the bone, cutting the secondaries loose from the bone…skin out to the thumbs, and I usually inject the thumbs with “Balmex”, and preservative that imbalms the hard to skin thumb…..The skin should be complete…I then flesh the skin, removing all the fat and flesh, and soak the skin in a good degreaser for about 6 hours….Rinse thouroughly with clean water, and put in in the washing machine , and spin the skin one cycle, removing most of the excess water….It will look terrible at this point, but take a hair dryer, and start at the tail, and dry the feathers and down from the tail to the head, and the feathers will fluff back up, and look good again…..I usually embalm the toes and feet of the bird, or inject them with “plumper”, a compound that keeps them from shrinking….It is then ready to mount……
