How can I launch my little air rocket properly?
I’m making a very small (like a Chubby pop bottle) compressed air rocket, so I can shoot it over a gap with an egg encased in it. It’s all part of a Physics assignment to design something that can carry an egg up a ramp and across a gap with nothing but “stored mechanical energy”.
So, if I pump it up completely it will probably go way to far, so I want to put it up only a couple times so it can have a short burst of power. But how do I set it off after only a couple pumps?
When I lived in germany as a kid, they had a toy like that. You’d actually add a small amount of water as well (don’t know why, but it worked better when you did)–about 5% water and the rest air. It had a sliding brace that would go over the rocket to hold it on the pump, so it wouldn’t launch prematurely.
I’d consider another solution to getting the egg back down safely than limiting the height of the flight. If it is really shaped like a chubby bottle with fins, you may have enough drag from it tumbling to make a safe recovery. There are some small (solid fuel based) model rockets that use this method to get down safely from hundreds of feet. It’s been a while since I’ve made any so check me on this, but I think it worked by having most of the weight toward the nose of the rocket, so it would be stable on the way up and unstable on the way down.
