How does Vietnam fit into the Cold War? Was containment the most important reason for U.S involvement or does it stem from something else?
Under the Truman administration the policy of containment was adopted in order to deter the spread of communism.The USA feared that any new communist state would be part of an expanding USSR empire.Communism had to be contained because it threatened the capitalist economy upon which Europe and America depended on.
Containment assumed that all nations must be aligned with either the USSR or the USA, there could be no neutral country. In other words any communist state was a supporter of the USSR.During the cold war there was a worry that the communist threat was becoming prominent within Europe and this threatened the USA as well as Europe. Due to economic difficulties, there was a powerful communist threat within France , and the USA was concerned that Vietnam, as a Communist nation, indicated a communist threat within Asia.Therefore it was claimed that in order to stop this communist threat the french empire needed to be restored, and as Vietnam was once under french rule, the USA decided to back the french army as they attempted to regain power of Vietnam. In terms of the cold war, the war in Vietnam is an example of the USA trying to create a balance of power between the two superpowers USA and USSR. Containment represented a fight against the spread and grip of communism i would argue that this is the most important reason for U.S involvement.
