Use filter bags, very useful for configuring your own choices of filter media. They are mesh bags of differing fineness, ask your local shop.
Actually if your biological filtration is working fine with your sponges (especially the fine ones at the bottom), there is no need for ammo chips. The danger is if too much ammonia is removed such that there is no more food for beneficial bacteria (who feed on ammonia). If they start dying off, your tank can’t handle the bio-load and you are back to square one as if you just set up the tank.
