Skinning Hunting

Skinning Hunting
need help with some coyote hunting and information?

ok i have been looking for a 22 hornet cant find one all i got is a 243 and can any body tell me how to make a homeade decoy and a tree blind or and thing to sit. and can any body give me some info of the best place to hunt i got a rabbit indestress call. and when i kill them what do i do with them skin them how. or what just give me some info about every thing and plaese tell me how to make homeade stuff

If you have a .243, you have a great coyote gun! I have both, and while the .22 Hornet kills them dead out to 150 yards, the .243 is a good choice, and is a great all-around caliber and will anchor a coyote out past 300 yards.

Stick with bullets in the 70-85 grain category and you will be fine.

Decoys are optional, but you can make a good simple one from a turkey feather, some fishing line and an aluminum arrow. You DO NOT have to have a decoy to be successful! I hunted for 30 years before I introduced a decoy into my calling, and have not noticed any difference in the number of coyotes I have called. You don’t have to shoot a rabbit for a decoy–that is just someone that does not know what they are talking about trying to be smart!

You definitely do not need a tree blind, just some good camo and patience, and above all try to remain as still as possible! You don’t have to have any particular kind of camo. I used to use a brown coveralls, gloves and a face mask! I use Natural Gear camo now. Since I don’t know where you live, I will share with you the places I hunt.

Here in Kansas, we hunt pasture land with canyons, as well as wooded creeks. You have to make sure that you watch the wind and sun. You need to try to have the wind in your face or at the very least, a cross wind. It is optimal to have the sun at your back or over your shoulders when you call. If you can, sit with your back against a tree, fence post, or hay bale to break up your outline.

The simplest hand call I have found, and the call I have called the majority of my coyotes with, is the open reed Tally-Ho. They are very cheap, around $8.00, and are the most versatile call I have ever seen.

I sell as many to the fur buyer as I skin. I would recommend that if you skin them, get with someone that has done it so they can mentor you. Actually skinning a coyote in the presence of someone experienced is more helpful that any online tutorial or DVD you could buy.

I would recommend you getting some DVD’s by the Coyote Doctors, Randy Anderson or Byron South. These guys know what they are doing, explain why they set up the way they do, and show you how to make the vocalizations they do.

Good luck, and if you have specific questions, shoot me an email!

Regards,
Tim
