How To Change Distributor Caps
Replacing a distributor cap in your vehicle can be a very simple task. You can save money by doing this task without the use of an auto repair shop.
First, determine what kind of distributor cap your vehicle needs. Any parts store in your area will be able to help you with this. Make sure you have your vehicle’s make, model, year and engine size with you. Before buying, make sure it looks like the one in your vehicle. To find the distributor cap, try following the spark plug wires back to the cap, which will be whatever the spark plugs hook in to.
Once found, you need to undo whatever is holding the cap in place. After you’ve determined how to remove the cap, set it to the side and take a look at the rotor button, which is what the distributor cap has been covering. If it looks in any way damaged, you’ll need to replace it before finishing the distributor cap replacement.
Next, set the new distributor cap next to the old one on the vehicle. Remove one spark plug wire from the old one and put it into the new one in the exact same place. Continue to do this until all of the spark plug wires from the old cap have been transferred to the new distributor cap. Make sure they’re done in the exact same order as the old cap; otherwise the vehicle may not function properly anymore. If the transferring of the spark plugs from one cap to the other means that you have to remove the wires completely, mark the spot on the new cap using masking tape or a marker that will show up.
Finally, once all the spark plug wires are set into the new cap, start working on replacing the new distributor cap into the old cap’s place in the vehicle. Place the cap over the rotor button and snap, screw or bolt it securely back in place. Turn the vehicle on to make sure it’s running the way it should. If it’s running rough or you feel something is wrong, make sure the cap is securely in place and the spark plug wires are attached correctly.
